Boundary Similkameen MLA concerned with proposed ALR changes
The B.C. government’s latest changes to protect agricultural land are causing some concern.
Amendments to provincial law were presented by Agriculture Minister Lana Popham last week would mean that farmers can no longer apply directly to the Agricultural Land Commission for any exclusion of land from the reserve.
Boundary Similkameen Liberal MLA Linda Larsen says while she has no objections to preserving farm land, but with this bill, it says if you own land in the ALR, you can't ask to have any of it removed, only government can do that.
According to Larsen, that would mean residents won't have control over their own land.
She's also concerned about a possible change to regional panels.
Instead there would be a centralized panel, with one representative from each region sitting on the board in Vancouver.
The bill still has to be debated in the Legislature.
