Carfentanil a concern around the IHA
Interior Health and the BC Coroners Service are out with a warning after an increase in carfentanil detections around the IH region in March.
Based on preliminary data provided by the BC Coroners Service, there were 19 suspected illicit drug overdose deaths occurring in BC in March 2019 where carfentanil was detected.
Of the 19, seven occurred in the IH region, but it's unclear which substances carfentanil has been detected in.
It's a synthetic opioid normally used as a sedative for large animals, similar to fentanyl, but it can be 100 times more toxic, and ingesting one or two grains can be fatal to humans.
Carfentanil is also not detected by fentanyl strips.
