The cause of a fire and explosion at the Alpine Motel in Nelson is under investigation by Nelson Fire and Rescue services and Technical Safety BC.

Crews were called out on Friday night, and while on the phone with the caller about the fire it was reported an explosion had occurred.

Crews arrived to a working fire that appeared to be contained to a single unit.

Before they arrived, two fire extinguishers had been used to try to extinguish the blaze in the laundry room of the facility.

Nearby suites were evacuated, and crews were able to put out the fire which was mostly contained to the laundry room with some extension to the rear of the building through the dryer vent that had ignited a small amount of grassy material on the ground.

Fortunately there were no injuries, damage is estimated at 25-thousand dollars.
