Central and West Kootenay waterways still invasive mussel free

Good news when it comes to invasive mussels in the Central and West Kootenay.

CKISS Aquatic Invasive Species Program Coordinator Khaylish Fraser says so far BC is still Zebra and Quagga Mussel free.

She says the invasive mussels have infiltrated lakes and rivers around North America, causing an estimated 43 million dollars in damage a year to Hydropower stations and municipal water supplies.

They can also cover  beaches in sharp shells, and crash native fish populations, and there is no method to eradicate the invasive species once they're in waterways.

Fraser says prevention remains key, having all boats inspected, including non motorized ones like canoes and stand up paddle boards, and following clean drain dry protocols.
