City of Nelson has new pedestrian regulations

The City of Nelson has now passed amendments to their Traffic Bylaw to manage inappropriate behaviour on streets and sidewalks.

The intent of the pedestrian regulations is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for residents and visitors in the downtown core, rather than specifically focusing on panhandling activity which was originally introduced a couple of years ago.

Bylaw and Police officers now have the ability issue bylaw notices or tickets to individuals who are not in compliance with the regulations.

Officers will first educate and promote voluntary compliance through conversation and interaction with the public before the bylaw is enforced.
