City of Nelson lobbying to be part of Guaranteed Basic Income Pilot Study
The City of Nelson would like to be a pilot community in a Provincial Guaranteed Basic Income Pilot Study.
Mayor Deb Kozak says there are high child poverty rates in the province, and some of the incomes of people in Nelson are quite low, and they feel the city would be a good candidate for the pilot.
So far there's no word on how the project would be rolled out, or when.
the Nelson at it's Best Committee and Kootenay Boundary Medical Association of Family Practices are on board to be a part of the pilot, and made the request for the city to lobby the province.
The idea was part of the document outlining the NDP Green Party Agreement to govern as a way to reduce poverty.
