Columbia River Treaty update under discussion
Senior U-S government officials are trying to get Canada to release more water from B-C reservoirs in order to help restore salmon habitat on the American side of the Columbia River.
But Canadian negotiators are resisting, with Cabinet Minister and Kootenay Columbia MLA Katrine Conroy saying people on the Canadian side are already seeing low water levels in the Columbia basin.
The issue came up during opening talks about an update of the Columbia River Treaty, which governs how the two countries manage the river.
The Americans also want to see less electricity generated from the river being routed to Canada.
