Commuter Parking the focus of a pilot project in Nelson

A new pilot project in Nelson will create parking space in the downtown for commuters.

21 stalls on Cedar Street near the curling rink that are currently free, will be converted to all day metered parking spots with a rate of five dollars a day.

Planning and Building Analyst Alex Thumm says free parking is counter intuitive if the goal is to actually find a  parking space, and from what they heard from a lot of people is that they're rather have the option of paying than having to keep circling around the block.

City Council approved the pilot project on Monday.

Depending on public feedback, council may implement more commuter parking spaces.
