Electricity rates going up 2.25 percent in Nelson next year.

A 2.25 per cent increase for electricity rates next year has been approved by Nelson City Council.

General Manager at Nelson Hyrdo, Alex Love says more energy than normal was produced in 2017 which resulted in an economic benefit.

However, to avoid the larger increase that's forecasted for 2019 some of the cost was absorbed into next year's increase.

The BC Utilities Commission must also approve the rate increase.

It would be effective April 1.
