FortisBC has a 3D model of Corra Linn Dam project, thanks to new technology

Brand new technology coming out of Trail.

Fortis BC needs to replace the gates of the Corra Linn Dam near South Slocan, a big project next year.

In preparation for the work, they've been working with a Selkirk College Student, Ben Marken, and Austin Engineering out of Trail who have created a 3D model of the gates.

Mary Austin says they started 3D printing when they designed a dam in Cranbrook, and it went really well, taking the cost of multiple designs way down, and ahead of schedule.

It also makes projects more understandable for everyone and she says it's a useful tool to improve worker safety, because a working model improves outcomes for people like the divers who are going to be underwater doing the work.

The 3D model shows the functionality of the gates, the powerhouse, and an accurate representation of the surrounding geography, including the river bottom.

The project just earned an award from Clean Energy BC for Operational Excellence.
