Good news this week when it comes to the West Kootenay Regional Airport

Phase 1 is complete when it comes to increasing safety and weather reliability for landings at the West Kootenay Regional Airport.

Stakeholders heard from Jeppsen Aviation who's been doing a study over the past year.

They're one of the largest aeronautical navigation systems companies in the world, and they say that a new navigation system could be successfully applied.

Castlegar CAO John Malcolm says that's good news for the region, because the airport is critical for the region's economic growth.

City staff is planning to meet with the national regulatory agencies within the next month, along with national airlines...that's phase 2 of the 3 phase project.

The year-long study at the West Kootenay Regional Airport has identified new approach and departure procedures, that, if fully designed and approved will dramatically improve the airport’s ability to operate when the weather becomes challenging in the winter.
