June jobless rate low in the Kootenays, more opportunities in Trail
The Kootenay unemployment rate came in at 4.9 percent in June.
That's on par with the provincial rate, and lower than the national one, and that trend is being seen in the Trail area as well.
Alia Locken is the Employment Services Team Lead for the Skills Centre in Trail, and she said it was a really good spring, with a spike of 173 job postings in May.
She says typically they see a bit of a bump when seasonal employment ends for the winter months, but this year has been exceptionally good for opportunities, and not just seasonal employment.
She says the definition of EI has also been adjusted nationally, so it's increased program eligibility for some, which is also opening up some opportunities.
