Kootenay jobless rate down, despite the fact there are fewer jobs around the region this year

The unemployment rate was down in the Kootenays in May, but there were fewer jobs year to year.

Last month there were 37-hundred residents looking for work for a rate of 5.1 percent, down from 7.7 percent in May of 2017 when there were 6-thousand people job hunting.

As for the number of people working that's gone down by over 25-hundred, the Labour Force is down by roughly 5-thousand.

The stats show that the number of jobs in the goods industries and natural resources are stable, with declines in services, including Accommodation and Food Services.

 Nationally The jobless rate held steady at 5.8 per cent in May even though the economy lost 75-hundred jobs.
