Kootenay Jobless rate remains the same year over year

The unemployment rate in the Kootenays saw no change year over year in February.

Last month, there were 47-hundred people looking for work for a rate of 6.7 percent, last year there were 7 hundred more people job hunting, but the rate was also 6.7 percent.

Some big changes though in terms of the number of people working, that fell close to 10-thousand year over year, a similar drop from the number of people in the work force in the Kootenays.

Statistics Canada says that can be due to a number of reasons, everything from retirement, to residents going back to school.

One area that saw job losses year over year was accommodation and food services.

Nationally The economy added 15,400 net new jobs last month and the unemployment rate edged down to 5.8 per cent _ but the gains were due to a surge in part-time work that offset a decline in full-time positions.
