Nelson WildSafe BC Coordinator tracking rats in Nelson

With rats having made their way into Nelson area recently, the Wildsafe BC Coordinator has been collecting data on sightings.

Dave White says the sightings started close to the railway, so there's speculation that's where they started coming into the community, but they've spread from there.

According to White,  most are black or roof rats, and while he's heard there may be Norwegian rats in the area, sightings are unconfirmed.

Rats can cause damage to buildings, as well as spreading bacteria, things like pneumonia, salmonella and rat bite fever.

He says getting rid of rats in communities is difficult, but like any wild animal, it's important to manage attractants.
