No serious injuries in tractor trailer fire that closed down the highway near Nelson

No serious injuries in yesterday's tractor trailer fire on Highway 6 near Nelson.

Nelson RCMP and West Kootenay Traffic Services responded to a report of a single vehicle crash.

A tractor trailer unit hauling a piece of heavy forestry machinery was fully engulfed in flames.

Preliminary investigation has determined that a piece of the trailer malfunctioned causing it to become partially detached. The tractor unit then ruptured a gas tank and the fuel ignited.

The man driving was able to escape with minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

RCMP investigators in conjunction with the BC Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement unit will be working together to determine the cause of the malfunction.

Highway 6 was closed for about an hour before traffic was able to move through single lane again.
