Rossland Council begins the process of banning plastic bags at retailers

Rossland Council has taken the first step towards banning all checkout bags at retailers in the community.

They did the first reading  of a bylaw this week.

Mayor Kathy Moore says they want to make sure they have community support, so that will be the next step.

Moore says there was also a lot of energy at council to go further eventually and look at  all other single use plastic items.

She says the McKelvey Creek landfill is filling up, and right now plastics account for over 15 percent of what comes into the landfill.
