Smart Kootenay Initiative working towards fixing regional challenges

West Kootenay communities have been working together, as part of the Smart Cities Challenge.

It's a competition sponsored by infrastructure Canada, encouraging cities and groups to submit proposals on how they'd like to improve the lives of residents through the use of data and technology.

The Smart Kootenay Initiative involves the cities of Rossland, Trail Castlegar and Nelson along with regional districts, businesses and public entities.

Darin Recchi of Thought Exchange says they found the biggest challenges in our community were  transportation and connectivity.

He says they're going to be providing a challenge statement to Infrastructure Canada later this month, and how they're going to work on challenges.

Short-listed groups will get 250 thousand dollars to put together a formal project plan, with the finalists chosen in 2019.

Residents can have their say or find out more about the project  smartkootenays.cbrdi.ca

The smart cities application deadline is April 24th.
