Youth the focus of Homelessness Action Week in Nelson next week

Nelson Youth who are at risk of homelessness will be the focus of Homelessness Action Week.

That's coming up October 8-12th in Nelson.

Nelson Committee on Homelessness Community Coordinator Ann Harvey says when they did their Point in Time Count and Survey of people experiencing homelessness, they found that 32 percent of respondents who were homeless were 24 years old or younger.

The whole understanding now that most homeless people have their first experience with it before the age of 19, really puts a whole new focus on where to put priorities on how to address the issue both locally and across the country.

The Public Forum is next Wednesday with a Guest Speaker, youth and service providers discussing the services and challenges for At-Risk and Homeless Youth.

The Guest Speaker Katherine McParland, the Executive Director and Founder of "A Way Home" Kamloops.

She's lived through the experience, being raised in numerous foster homes in her childhood, and living through several experiences of homelessness before she landed in the right place and found needed supports.

The week also kicks off with a Thanksgiving Dinner at Our Daily Bread Monday at 5.
