Local engineering firm sharing research at International Dam Conference
The International Commission on Large Dams is holding a conference this week in Ottawa, and Austin Engineering is sharing their research.
Austin Engineering Director of Business Development Mary Austin says working with Selkirk, FortisBC and UBC Okanagan, they've completed phase 3 of their study on how dams respond during an earthquake.
It's called Comparative Seismic Performance of Dams in Canada and China using Numerical Analysis and Shake table testing.
She says the most important finding is that the water behind the dam actually dampens the effect of the earthquake, and that has significant outcomes for new and retrofitted dams and can mean significant savings in concrete.
According to Austin, the seismic safety of new and aging concrete dams is becoming one of the most important issues in the Dam Safety Engineering Field.
