Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan set for Sunday
The ninth annual Prospera Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan takes place this weekend, bringing 2,600 cyclists of all skill levels through Penticton.
The main event begins 7 a.m. Sunday at Penticton’s Gyro Park, travelling through Summerland, Okanagan Falls, Oliver and Kaleden, before winding its way back to Gyro Park.
The massive race ranks as one of the best in North America and most scenic, with four different ride distances starting with the shortest, the Cortofondo (55 km) to the longest, the Granfondo of 160 km.
Proceeds from the event go to the Axel Merckx Youth Development Foundation.
Large sections of Main Street will be fully closed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
The majority of the riders hail from B.C. but there are some coming from the Philippines, New Zealand and various areas of the U.S.
The economic impact of the Grandfondo for Penticton is upwards of $5 million...
