Highway 97 closed indefinately - Callan Road to be built up as a detour
Thursday, Feb. 7, 12 pm
The BC Ministry of Transportation has confirmed it plans to turn Callan Road, which is located just below Highway 97 and east of the Summerland slide, into a two-lane detour route. This will allow drivers. including commercial trucks, to bypass the rock slide closure.
The Ministry expects the additional commute time to be between 5 and 15 minutes once Callan Road is operational.
Two crews are working 10-hour shifts, or 20 hours per day, to complete the work.
The Callan Road extension is expected to take 4-5 days to complete.
Highway 97 has been closed to all traffic since a major rock slide took place Saturday, bringing down 4,000-6,000 cubic meters of rock onto the highway, the main thoroughfare between Penticton and Kelowna.
