Bear spray deployment in Penticton
On May 23rd, 2019, at 10:50 a.m., emergency crews were dispatched to attend the “Compass House”, shelter, located at 123 Nanaimo Ave East. Staff reported several patrons had been affected by the strong smell of bear spray.
Upon arrival, it was determined six people inside the shelter were affected by residual bear spray in the air, however no one was directly sprayed.
Later, the man responsible called 911 to turn himself in as being the one who deployed the bear spray. He was subsequently located and arrested. The man explained he was trying to defend himself from unknown individuals.
As no direct victim was identified, the man was released from Police custody.
