Province Releases 2018 Figures On Illicit Drug Overdose Deaths

The B.C Coroners Service says that 1,489 people died of illicit drug overdoses in 2018.

That's just above the 1,486 lives lost in 2017.

55 people died of illicit drug overdoses in Kelowna, down from 75 in 2017, while 48 people died in Kamloops, up from the 2017 figure of 38.

Vernon saw at least 24 overdose deaths for the year, and the Coroners Service says that Fentanyl was involved in 86% of cases province-wide.

The Thompson Cariboo Shuswap region - which includes areas like Kamloops, Salmon Arm, and Revelstoke saw at least 120 deaths for the year.

There were only 8 overdose deaths in the East Kootenay region, which covers Cranbrook up to Golden.
