RCMP To Increase Patrols Following Vandalism At Rainbow Crosswalk
Salmon Arm's Mayor says that she has spoken with the RCMP in regards to recent vandalism at the new rainbow crosswalk.
City workers spent Monday morning covering up hateful graffiti that appeared overnight.
Nancy Cooper has talked to the RCMP, who told her that they will be watching the area, saying "What they are saying is that because the message was basically targeted, that it does then fall under a hate crime. They will be increasing patrols in that area to keep a closer eye on it."
Cooper says she's aware that those behind the vandalism are likely hoping for a response, saying "We can't just let it be unscrutinised, we have to look into it, and as much as we dont want to give these people attention; We have to do something."
The crosswalk has needed two coats of fresh paint since its installation on July 18th.
The Mayor says that the City is committed to maintaining that crosswalk.
