DFO Announces More Chinook Restrictions on the North Coast

It was just a few weeks ago sweeping closures were announced when it came to fishing for Salmon on the Skeena and Nass Rivers.

Even with those closures, more restrictions on Chinook were expected and now they're here.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans outlined delayed starts and more restrictions on how many Chinook salmon can be caught for both recreational and commercial fisheries in the marine and tidal waters.

Commercial Fishing restrictions: Area F troll opening has been delayed until July 10 along with boundary changes.

As for recreational fishing:

Effective June 1, 2018 to June 15, 2018, the daily limit is one Chinook per day in Areas 3 to 5, 103 to 105, Subarea 102-1, and that portion of Area 101 east of 131 degrees 40.0 minutes West longitude

Effective June 16, 2018 to July 9, 2018, there is zero retention of Chinook Salmon in Areas 3 to 5, 103 to 105, Subarea 102-1, and that portion of Area 101 east of 131 degrees 40.0 minutes West longitude.

Effective July 10, 2018 to July 31, 2018, the daily limit is one Chinook per day in Areas 3 to 5, 103 to 105, Subarea 102-1, and that portion of Area 101 east of 131 degrees 40.0 minutes West longitude

Effective June 1, 2018 to July 31, 2018 the daily limit is one Chinook per day in Areas 6 and 106.

Meanwhile, on Haida Gwaii restrictions include:

Effective June 1, 2018 to July 9, 2018, the daily limit is one (1) Chinook per day in Areas 1, 2, 142, and that portion of Area 101 west of 131 degrees 40.0 minutes West longitude.

The DFO says major action needs to be taken to fix the problem.

"This is about conservation. We want to have Chinook fisheries for the future and that means something needs to be done today," North Coast Area Director Colin Masson said.
