Air Quality Advisory Issued For Smithers -- Woodstove Use Restricted

Stagnant winter weather conditions are creating elevated pollution levels in the Bulkley Valley, resulting in an air quality advisory for Smithers.

The BC Environment Ministry and Northern Health say high concentrations of fine particulate matter are expected to persist throughout the day.

This advisory is in effect until further notice.

Persons with chronic underlying medical conditions should postpone strenuous exercise -- especially outdoors -- until the advisory is lifted.

Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes, and lung or heart disease.

For the duration of the advisory, the use of woodstoves is prohibited within the Town of Smithers, unless the woodstove the only source of heat in a dwelling.
