Former Kitimat Mayor to Join FCM Roll of Honour

Former Kitimat Mayor Joanne Monaghan has been chosen to receive a national award.

Monaghan has been selected for admission to this year's Roll of Honour for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, and will be formally inducted in Ottawa in early June.

Monaghan served as president of the FCM in 2000, and said her greatest accomplishment was leading the drive to have Canadian municipalities recognized as an order of government.

"To actually change the constitution of Canada, which they said could never ever ever be done -- took us two years, but we did it, and that was to create a third order of government for municipalities -- they were never an order of government before, and that allowed us to get funding, etc, and to be a part of the federal government," said the former mayor.

Monaghan was also a two-time president of the Union of BC Municipalities, and spent 17 years as chair or vice-chair of the Kitimat-Stikine Regional District.
