Inquest Begins Into 2014 Police Shooting Death of Hazelton Man in Surrey

A coroners inquest is scheduled to begin today into the case of a 23-year-old Hazelton man who died after he was shot by transit police in a Surrey grocery store over two years ago.

Police have said Naverone Woods was distraught when officers were called to the Safeway store on the morning of December 28th, 2014.

He was shot by an officer after reportedly approaching her with a knife.

Woods was rushed to hospital after being shot, but died shortly after arriving.

The Independent Investigations Office, which investigates serious cases involving police, cleared officers of any wrongdoing in May of last year.

Friends and family have described Woods as a gentle, caring young man, and said they were shocked by his death.

The coroners inquest will hear facts about the case, and the jury will be able to make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.
