Kitsumkalum Salmon BBQ Going Ahead After All this weekend

The annual Kitsumkalum Salmon Barbecue fundraiser is going ahead this weekend after all.

The Kitsumkalum Nation cancelled last year's barbecue, due to low fish returns at the Tyee Test Fishery near the mouth of the Skeena  -- and was preparing to do the same this year.

However, in a post on the band's website, Kitsumkalum Communications Coordinator Heather Bohn said a community member, who had set a net last week prior to the sockeye closure implemented Monday by the DFO, had passed away suddenly -- resulting in a quantity of fish that had to be salvaged and prcessed immediately in order to avoid spoilage.

Kitsumkalum Events Committee lead Christina Stanley says volunteers mobilized quickly and managed to process the remainder of the fish, once the man's immediate family had received their distribution of his catch.

The annual barbecue, which takes place Saturday at noon at the Kitsumkalum field, raises funds for elders and youth in Kitsumkalum.
