More Delays In Terrace Aquatic Centre Reopening

Those looking to swim at the new and improved Terrace Aquatic Centre will have to wait even longer.

With the original completion date set for early this year-- the project is now months behind schedule, but the mayor of Terrace says it's important to make sure the job's done right.

In a February news release the city said the pool was set to be on track for a mid- May opening.

That later got pushed back to mid- July-- and this time around a specific timeline is not being given.

"We don't have an estimated opening date at this time, we just have to wait and see what happens with the architect. If there is stuff we need to massage, do we do that before it's open, wait until after it's open.. so it's just waiting for the best plan to go forward," said Terrace Mayor Carol Leclerc at this week's City Council meeting.

The eight million dollar renewal of the aquatic centre was contracted out to Viking Construction in March of 2017.

"The big picture pool is doing really well, it's all the little things that are causing grief and they are the things that need to get ironed out," said Leclerc.

The city released sneak peek photos of the pool last month -- and Leclerc said an update on the project could be coming as early as next week.

"The architect will be here next will and he'll be going through all the things that need to be completed before we can accept the pool back to the city."

Special features of the new centre include a significantly larger fitness room, along with additional amenities such as a family change room, a lazy river, and a spacious viewing area.

Lifeguards for the new pool are currently being trained at the Sam Lindsay Aquatic Centre in Kitimat.
