New Opportunities For Midget-Aged Hockey Players in Northwest

The president of the Terrace Minor Hockey Association says local players should benefit from a new Minor Midget League program announced by BC Hockey.

The league will give 15-year-old players an opportunity to develop with other athletes of the same age.

Darryl Bjorgaard says the Minor Midget League will allow kids who aren't quite ready to make the MAJOR Midget League -- but still are fairly strong players -- a chance to compete at a high level.

"Because we have a few kids that are on that bubble, that could well make that team so that will give them some exposure to some higher-level hockey, which will elevate their play," he said.

The Northwest Zone will consist of Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Terrace, Stewart, Hazelton, Smithers, Houston, Burns Lake, Fraser Lake, Fort St James and Vanderhoof.

The teams will play 30 regular-season games, battling to qualify for the eight playoff positions.
