Shovel Lake Fire Growing Rapidly

An aggressive wildfire burning northeast of Burns Lake is expanding rapidly, prompting the BC Wildfire Service to impose an area restriction order around it.

The Order is for crown land around the Shovel Lake wildfire, which has exploded to over 4500 hectares.
A map of the area is at:  http://bcfireinfo.for.gov.bc.ca/ftp/!Project/WildfireNews/7302018~30716_18%20R11498%20MAP%20AreaRestriction%20Legal%208.5X11P%2020180729.pdf?WT.cg_n=HootSuite

Yesterday, 75 ground crews were on site, supported by 17 pieces of heavy equipment, five helicopters and airtankers.

The area restriction was put in place to protect public safety due to the wildfire's rapid growth and to avoid interference with fire suppression efforts.

The BC Wildfire Service and the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako are co-hosting Public Meetings on the Shovel Lake Wildfire -- tonight at the  Stellaquo New Hall on the Stellat’en Reserve -- and tomorrow night in Burns Lake at the Island Gospel Fellowship Church.

Both meetings start at 6:00pm, with doors open at 5:30.
