Telegraph Creek Evacuation Soon to Be Ended

Three months after wildfires forced them to leave their homes, Telegraph Creek residents will soon be allowed to finally return to their properties.

In a news release this morning, Tahltan Emergency Operations Centre Director Feddie Louie said families who were forced to evacuate will be able to start returning home beginning November 15th -- and she's hoping to have  all evacuees back home by December 20th.

The specific return date will depend on when each home has been cleaned of smoke damage and refurbished.

The Telegraph Creek community lost 21 homes, 2 businesses and several community buildings to the massive 120-thousand-hectare blaze in August.

Over 160 structures were destroyed in the region, which included historical structures and fish camps.

Tahltan Band Chief Rick McLean said he was overwhelmed by the love and support the Tahltan Nation has received from volunteers, donors and the many others who have assisted during the long, drawn-out evacuation.
