Reaction Pours In As Prince Rupert's McKay Street Park Wins $100,000
Smiles and cheers filled the air in Prince Rupert this morning as residents learned the McKay Street Park project won $100,000.
The prize is from BCAA's "Play Here" contest.
Transition Prince Rupert says the money will go toward revitalizing the McKay Street Park.
President Ken Shaw says this will mean a lot to the area.
"The park has been neglected for many, many years. It's got the highest density children living right by in M'akola housing. It's going to be a fabulous opportunity for the kids.
Transition Prince Rupert says with the 100-thousand dollars, they plan to cut down these overgrown trees and the overgrown grass. Saying this will make it safer for the kids while they phase in the other upgrades.
"The park will include basketball, natural play area, garden space, hopefully a skate park, basketball, a dog park and a picnic area. Something for everyone is what we intended."
Local groups in the area are ecstatic about the money as well.
Colleen Hermanson is the manager of Kaien Anti-Poverty Society and runs after school programs right across the park.
She says this will make it a lot safer for the kids who are eager to play outdoors.
"I'm so proud of what has happened here. A hundred thousand dollars is coming our way. We will see such a huge difference in this neighbourhood. The trees are coming down and the ground work is going to begin."
Hermanson is looking forward to seeing the community garden expanded as well.
Shaw says they can't thank the community enough.
"It some ways, this is classic Prince Rupert. Prince Rupert is a small community, it's a close community. When Prince Rupert needs to, we all rally together for. First of all, thank you Prince Rupert for all of your votes. We were number one and that made an important difference."
There are three other finalists in the province wide competition including Quesnel, Kamloops and Galiano Island.
Officials behind the McKay Street Project are eager to start the work as soon as possible.
