Search Suspended For Man Who Went Missing In The Stikine River

Officials have suspended a search for a Belgian man, who went missing in the Stikine River.

RCMP say twenty-five-year-old Stephane Goossee and a co-worker at a commercial fisheries outlet were in a canoe, which capsized last Thursday afternoon in the area of Great Glacier Lake near the Alaska border.

The co-worker managed to swim to shore, but Goossee disappeared in the fast-flowing water.

Police say the area is extremely remote, and an extensive search involving RCMP air services, Terrace Water Rescue, Canadian Helicopters and local fishing outfits has turned up no signs of the missing man.

The US Coast Guard and the Wrangell, Alaska, Fire Department also assisted with the search.

The case is now being handled as a presumed drowning and missing person investigation by Mounties.
