Smithers RCMP Officers Not Charged

The province's criminal justice branch has decided against laying any charges against two R-C-M-P officers after a man was injured during his arrest in Smithers two years ago.

B-C's Independent Investigations Office collected evidence regarding the incident on August 14th, 2015.

A release from the Criminal Justice Branch says the suspect resisted arrest and suffered a lacerated kidney and spleen when he was physically restrained by the two R-C-M-P members.

It has concluded the officers' actions -- which included the use of pepper spray, a Taser and their batons -- were reasonable, given the fight put up by the suspect, who later pled guilty to assault and mischief.

The Criminal Justice Branch says it has released its reasons for not approving charges against the officers in a "Clear Statement" in order to maintain confidence in the integrity of the criminal justice system.
