Due to snow cancellations this week Canadian Blood Services REALLY needs our help!

This week's winter storm not only caused school and business cancellations but it also had a devastating impact on our local Canadian Blood Services.  The McMaster clinic was cancelled due to the storm and 108 units of blood were not able to be collected. At their permanent clinic they were only able to collect 7 units from a goal of 32.

So why do these numbers even matter ... well ... to keep up with demand alone - Hamilton needs 1 hundred and 84 donations each week - and with the snow this week alone Canadian Blood Services missed out on collecting 140 units.

To try and make up the loss this week there are clinics open today and tomorrow that you can be a part of.  This afternoon at the Canadian Blood Services location at 35 Stone Church Road in Ancaster from 4pm - 8pm and Thursday March 16th, 8am-12pm.

  • Hamilton's permanent blood donor clinic that services the region is open 5 days a week, with a variety of morning and evening hours. It is located at 35 Stone Church Road in Ancaster.
  • 1 in 2 Canadians are eligible to donate, but only 1 in 60 do! Yet every minute of every day, there is a Canadian in need of a blood transfusion.
  • There is an immediate need for donors in Hamilton, especially new donors. Eligibility information can be found on our website on blood.ca, the GiveBlood app or by calling 1-888-2DONATE.

There is also special blood drive happening right now called “Iron Gabe”.  It's for 6 year old Gabriel who this past Family Day weekend found out he was very sick.  After a visit to MAC ER with something as innocent as a sore throat, he later found out he had Leukemia - a disease that will require numerous blood donations as well as platelets to keep him superhero strong. Gabe is a big fan of superheros like Spiderman and Ironman and people like you and I who donated blood.  Gabe’s school teachers, friends and family are all donating blood and there will be a little “Guest Book” in the clinics that people can sign to show support.

Show your support for Gabriel when you donate, post photos of your donation and use the hashtags #IronGabe, and #HamiltonDonors or #BurlingtonDonors @1029klite and @itsinyoutogive
