Court says NRP officer used excessive force

A judge has ruled that an Niagara Regional Police officer used excessive force when arresting an extremely intoxicated man.

The arrest was made in August of 2106 behind a plaza on Thorold Stone Road.

Metroland Media reports the judge described the use of force as "unnecessary,  disproportionate and unlawful.”

The 52-year-old man suffered  a severe laceration to his cheek.

Sgt. Michael Baxter was found  guilty of assault causing bodily harm.

He will be sentenced Feb. 7.
