Selena Gomez, Kelly Clarkson Honoured At 'Billboard' Event

Selena Gomez paid tribute Thursday night to her friend Francia Raisa – who donated her kidney to the singer –  while accepting a Billboard Women in Music award.

“To be honest, I think Francia should be getting this award because she saved my life," an emotional Gomez said.

The “Wolves” singer also thanked her family “because they stuck with me through some really hard times.” Gomez added: "I want people to know I respect the platform that I have so deeply."

Gomez was honoured as woman of the year at this year’s show, which also paid tribute to Kelly Clarkson, Camila Cabello, Solange Knowles and Mary J. Blige.

Clarkson, who received the powerhouse award, told the audience it’s time female artists were not pitted against each other. “Accept the fact that there is room for everyone,” she said. “Once women start really respecting each other as women and artists and all of that, then men will.

"I want to lift up and support everyone."

Host Ciara referred to the growing number of women coming forward to talk about sexual harassment and sexual assault this year – including in the music industry.

“This year we have all witnessed the power of speaking up to share our truths,” she said. “Lets all remember how important it is that we use our voice so that the next generation's path has less resistance, less hate, less sexism, less body shaming, and let it be said loud and clear – less harassment.”
