Layoffs at Hamilton's public schools
Hamilton's public school board says it is laying off 99 high school teachers because of provincial funding cuts.
Board chair Alex Johnstone says the cuts amount to the equivalent of staffing for more than two full high schools.
She notes the teachers effected by the cuts will be able to go on the list of second tier teachers and try to secure long term occasional positions.
Johnstone says they are in discussions with the Ministry of Education to determine if its promise of funding to prevent layoffs because of reduced class sizes will apply to all employee groups.
She adds we hope to recall the teachers back, but aren't sure when that will happen.
