Ontario's new top cop take the reins

Today's the day the OPP officially welcomes a new Commissioner.

Thomas Carrique, a 29 year veteran of the force, will take charge following a Change of Command ceremony this afternoon at 1 p.m.

Carrique's appointment comes after Ron Taverner, a longtime family friend of Premier Doug Ford, withdrew his name from consideration for the position in March following public backlash.

In November the Ford government announced plans to make Taverner the Commissioner, leading to allegations of Ford promoting close personal friends to positions of power and influence.

When Taverner withdrew his name, he said the OPP needed 'new leadership and a change in culture at its most senior levels.'
