Fredericton schools raise money for displaced Syrian family

The Anglophone West School District says three of its schools raised more than $2,700 for a family whose home was destroyed by fire last month.

In a press release, the school district says Devon Middle School raised over $2,100, Barkers Point Elementary School raised $309, while Leo Hayes High School raised over $350 and provided clothing.

The Fredericton Multicultural Association provided temporary accommodations for the family after the fire and began accepting donations of clothing and food, with local schools then joining in with gift cards and cash donations.

The family of eight, who arrived in Canada from Syria last May, escaped the fire unhurt, and plan to stay in the Fredericton area where they are looking for a new home.
