Explosive Devices Found on Tedman Ave. Property
Shortly before 2:00 a.m. members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service Tactical Unit proceeded onto the property of 539 Tedman Avenue under the authority of a Criminal Code Search Warrant. The Tactical Unit Explosive Disposal Specialists located four homemade explosive devices in one unit of the building, as well as, in a detached shed. The Specialists wore a bomb suit and operated the explosive robot while locating the devices. The EDU was able to secure all four devices and safely dispose of them on scene.
The Ontario Provincial Police Tactical Response Unit Explosive Detection Canine and his handler conducted a sweep of the building along with all of the out buildings on the property. No additional explosive devices were detected.
The Tactical Unit, Criminal Investigations Division Detectives and members of the Forensic Unit completed a search warrant of the residence and have since cleared the scene.
The 34-year old man that was taken into Police custody yesterday morning has been charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada;
Possession of Prohibited Device
Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose x2
Explosives – Making or Possessing for an Unlawful Purpose
Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon/Device
Possession of Incendiary Material
Drive Under Suspension x2
The residents that were evacuated are allowed to return home. There is no further danger to the Public. Police thank everyone for their patience and cooperation. They also thank the Canadian Red Cross – Sudbury Chapter for all of its support and assistance with the community members who were displaced from their homes.
Officers are currently on scene of 539 Tedman Avenue after receiving information of a potential risk to Public Safety. Police received information of possible explosive devices located on the property of 539 Tedman Avenue in Greater Sudbury.
The information has not yet been confirmed, however, as a safety precaution, Officers are in the process of going door-to-door, evacuating the building and neighbouring residences in order to investigate the matter. Uniform Officers and members of the Tactical Unit have the area contained. The Explosive Disposal Unit is on scene and will be conducting a thorough search of the property in order to ensure Public Safety.
Police ask that community members avoid the area while Officers are on scene. Barricades will be set up on Dell Street at Tedman Avenue, Melvin Avenue at Edith Street and Melvin Avenue at Dell Street. The roadways will be closed to incoming pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Community members living in that area who wish to leave will be allowed to do so.
Around 9:40 a.m. Officers arrested a 34-year old man and he is currently in Police custody. The investigation into this matter is ongoing.
