Wife of former Lt.-Gov. George Stanley dies

The wife of former New Brunswick lieutenant-governor George Stanley has died.

Premier Brian Gallant issued a statement Friday following the death of Ruth Stanley.

According to her obituary, the native of Kingston, Ont., passed away at her home in Kelowna, B.C. recently at age 64.

"Mrs. Stanley strongly believed in the importance of being involved in her community," said Gallant, "and was a tireless advocate for gender equality, youth, health care and the arts."

Stanley received the Order of New Brunswick in 2010 for her dedication to the arts, health, care and promotion of gender equality.

George Stanley, the late husband of Ruth Stanley, was appointed New Brunswick's 25th lieutenant-governor in Dec. 1981 at the age of 74.

He served as lieutenant-governor until Aug. 1987 and passed away in 2002.
