Arrest of Bathurst resident leads to seizure of contraband smokes and illegal substances
A 66 year old Bathurst resident was arrested on Wednesday, March 1st, for distributing and possessing contraband tobacco as well as possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
Police say a search of a residence yielded additional contraband tobacco, illegal substances along with cash.
The 9,500 non-stamped cigarettes represent a loss of approximately $2,100 in provincial taxes.
It's estimated the province loses out on nearly $13 million dollars a year because of the illegal tobacco market.
