Bathurst axes environmental certification plan for Youghall Beach
Youghall Beach won't become a Blue Flag certified beach after all.
Bathurst mayor Paolo Fongemie says certification would prevent certain activities like raking up debris as it requires the beach to be left in a natural state.
The certification was expected to help attract European tourists, but Fongemie says Bathurst mainly welcomes tourist from the Maritimes, Maine, and Quebec.
Meanwhile, Fongemie says there's about $160,000 worth of work planned for Youghall Beach this summer, including repairs to the road and the completion of a breakwater to help fight erosion.
