Bathurst man sentenced to three years in relation to devastating downtown blaze

A 55 year old Bathurst man has been sentenced to three years behind bars in relation to a devastating fire in 2015 that levelled part of the city's downtown.

Perry Kinsman was sentenced yesterday and has been in custody since his arrest in August of 2016.

He's been credited with 910 days for time served and is also banned from owning firearms for life.

Kinsman's lawyer told the court he had been drinking the night of the fire and was searching for cigarette butts behind the Bird's Eye View pet shop.

He lit a small piece of paper to light his cigarette and left it behind the store.

Upon receiving his sentence Kinsman said he was just glad nobody was hurt.
