Belledune dairy farmer says Ottawa betrayed N.B. dairy producers when it signed U.S.M.C.A trade deal

There are currently 192 dairy producers in New Brunswick, but a Belledune dairy farmer suspects that number will be significantly less this time next year thanks to a trade deal Canada recently signed with the U.S. and Mexico.

Nick Duivenvoorden says he feels betrayed by Ottawa and that concessions made at the expense of Canada's dairy producers under the new USMCA deal in favour of safeguarding Ontario's automobile industry mean operations like his will lose out.

A dairy farmer for four decades, Duivenvoorden says he's shocked to see a politician like Donald Trump, who knows nothing about the dairy industry, appropriate the right to penetrate and destabilize another country's food sovereignty.

He says politicians lied when they said supply management would be protected and now the system is compromised and risks collapse.
