Canadian bishops unanimously adopt new guidelines to protect kids from sexual predators

New guidelines aimed at protecting children from sexual predators within the church have been unanimously adopted by Canada's Catholic bishops.

The document, was released last week and contains 69 recommendations stemming from lessons the bishops have learned over the past 25 years, with the chief lesson being:  'victims must come first'.

The recommendations include full co-operation with police, more vigorous background checks for church employees and volunteers, as well as abolishing and waiving confidentiality clauses relating to both past and present abuse case settlements.

Canadian bishops have pledged to enforce the guideline's which have also received the Pope's seal of approval.
